The IONIQ 5 – The competitor ID.4 – with Taycan technology on board!
The 800-volt technology has found its way into the middle class for the first time! As the IONIQ 5, an ID.4 competitor comes onto the market with the charging power of the Taycan!
The new IONIQ 5 celebrated its world premiere on February 23, 2021. After the huge success of its two electric models Ioniq and Kona, which are also offered as combustion engines, Hyundai has now decided to offer in the future all-electric models under the sub-brand “IONIQ” has now has E-GMP (Electric-Global Modular Platform) and designed its own platform, which is geared towards e-models.
With the platform, there is a comparatively long wheelbase, which is of great benefit for passengers sitting in the back seat. The central tunnel, which is no longer necessary in an electric vehicle, increases the sense of space in the front area and a passenger sitting in the centre at the back has significantly more space for their legs.
In addition to the IONIQ 5, other models of the new sub-brand, such as the SUV IONIQ 7 or the IONIQ 6 sedan, will also be based on the E-GMP.
With its sturdy appearance, the IONIQ 5 shows that the Koreans are fully behind electric vehicles and combustion vehicles are a thing of the past. With a wheelbase of exactly 3 meters and an external length of 4.64m, the overhangs are relatively short, and you can see at first glance that the focus has been on the most spacious vehicle possible.
The headlight structure on the front is somewhat reminiscent of the light signature of current BMW models and contributes to the self-confident appearance of the IONIQ 5. As per usual for electric cars, a radiator grill is no longer required, and the front of the vehicle is therefore completely covered to optimize air resistance. The black bar between the headlights houses all the sensors for the assistance systems, such as the radar sensor for the standard distance cruise control.
For the exterior mirrors, Hyundai relies on technology that is already familiar from the Audi e-tron or the Honda e. The IONIQ 5 uses digital exterior mirrors, which use cameras to project an image onto displays in the interior. As a result, the front surface of the mirror can be reduced, and the air resistance can be reduced. In contrast to the small electric car from Honda, the digital mirrors should not be standard, but come with an extra charge.
The overall very angular design of the electric Korean can also be found at the rear. The taillights have a similar design to the front headlights and the design line continues as if from a single piece from front to back.
The interior of the new IONIQ 5 also features a very modern, but also sustainable design. The driver will find two generous displays in his field of vision. Driving-related data such as the current speed are shown on a 12.25-inch display behind the steering wheel. In addition, this data is also projected onto the road in front of the IONIQ 5 via a 44-inch head-up display. Another 12.25-inch display shows data from the navigation system, music media (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported ex works) or data on the battery status and the remaining range. If you have ordered the optional solar roof, data about it can also be read on the central screen.
Below these displays there are only a few physical controls that are available for the air conditioning. Here, Hyundai has clearly understood where classic push buttons and rotary knobs are still beneficial.
Between the driver and the front passenger there is a spacious centre console with a variety of storage options. For maximum comfort, the centre console can be moved a full 14cm forwards or backwards.
There is also a lot of space in the back seat. By removing the central tunnel, even three adults can comfortably sit in the back of the IONIQ 5. As a special feature, the second row of the IONIQ 5 can be moved lengthways by 13.5cm, which either offers maximum legroom or the trunk volume can be significantly expanded. As shown in the graphic above, the two front seats can also be fully extended to form a bed, and nothing stands in the way of a short power nap while charging.
In terms of materials, Hyundai no longer wants to use animal products in the future, in order to do justice to the sustainable image here too.
On the technical side, the IONIQ 5 offers the right package for everyone. There is either a 58kWh battery or a 72.6kWh battery, each with rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. In addition, the IONIQ can pull 5 trailers, even up to 1,600kg are allowed. With 305HP and up to 605NM torques
The top model sprints torque from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.2 seconds, which means that driving fun is by no means neglected.
But what is special about the technology of the new Korean electrician is its charging technology. With an 800-volt system like the one used in the Porsche Taycan, significantly higher charging capacities are possible than with previous models with a 400-volt system. The IONIQ 5 achieves a maximum charging power of up to 220kW, which means that the battery should be charged from 10 to 80% in just 18 minutes, so the power nap on the comfortable front seats is only very brief. If you also order the solar roof, which is subject to a surcharge, you will benefit from 2,000km (1,243mi) of free range per year under ideal conditions.
